How to File a Successful Fort Bend County Property Tax Protest

If you think your property is being over-assessed, protest Fort Bend County property tax and save money. The market values of the properties are appraised every year by Fort Bend Central Appraisal District (FBCAD). If you think your appraisal is not accurate, you are entitled to protest and even pay less property tax.

Step 1: Read Your Appraisal Notice

Your Fort Bend County property tax protest begins with a careful examination of the notice FBCAD mailed to you. Your appraisal value, upon which your tax will be calculated, will be listed on the notice. Verify that everything related to your property, square footage, condition, and improvements is accurate. If not or if the value is incorrect, protest immediately.

Step 2: Gather Evidence

To file a successful Fort Bend County property tax protest, you’ll need to gather evidence that supports your claim that the property has been overvalued. This can include recent sales of comparable properties, photographs of any property damage or issues, or an independent appraisal. The more solid your evidence, the stronger your case will be.

Step 3: File Your Protest

Second, you protest your property taxes to FBCAD by or on May 15, or 30 days from the date your notice of appraisal was mailed. You can protest online, by mail, or in person. When you protest, you will be requested, if the state comptroller so desires, to have an informal conference with an appraiser or hearing with the Appraisal Review Board (ARB).

By doing so and objecting to your Fort Bend County property taxes, you can lower the assessed value of your property and save you money on your yearly property taxes.
