Fight Back Against High Taxes: Harris County Property Tax Protest Explained

Property taxes are a scary expense, but if you feel that your property appraisal value is excessive, you can protest the Harris County property tax to reduce your payment. Your property appraisal value is reviewed annually by the Harris County Appraisal District (HCAD). This will affect your property tax bill, so review the appraisal for accuracy.

Step 1: Read Over Your Appraisal Notice

Step one of protesting Harris County property tax is to read your appraisal notice very carefully. Your appraised property value is utilized in calculating your tax rate. Check for precise property data such as the property's square footage, status of the property, and the type of the property. Having found discrepancies or mistakes, now it is time to protest.

Step 2: Prepare Evidence to Base Your Protest

To complete a successful Harris County property tax protest you must have proof to demonstrate the appraised value of your property is excessive. That could be records of similar property sales, photos of property damage or property condition issues, or an independent appraisal. The more tangible your proof, the better your case.

Step 3: File Your Protest

After you've gathered your required evidence, submit your property tax protest to HCAD by May 15th or within 30 days of receiving notice of appraisal. You can submit online, by mail, or in person. Submitting will trigger a possible informal hearing with an appraiser or formal hearing with the Appraisal Review Board (ARB).

By doing so and protesting your Harris County property tax, you will be in a position to lower the value of your valuable property, and this will lower your tax value and save you money in the process.
